URBAN MISSION COMMITTEE
Locally, this committee seeks to do what Jesus has commanded us—to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and welcome the stranger. Toward those ends, the committee is involved with Habitat for Humanity, Friendship House, Sojourners’ Place, and several mentoring efforts, and many others.

CHURCH IN THE WORLD COMMITTEE
Globally, this committee works in support of the PC(USA) Worldwide Ministries program to provide mission services. We reach out to the world with people and resources and build relationships with partner churches. We provide love, care and financial support to those in need wherever they may be and enable self-development and education. We encourage members of the congregation to take advantage of opportunities for international and intercultural travel to countries such as Guatemala and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BAZAAR
There are many areas of service at this annual Women of Westminster fundraiser for mission, including white elephant, antiques and collectibles, crafts, silent auction, food preparation and service.
Time Commitment: In late October or early November, one Friday from 6:00–9:00 p.m. and the following Saturday, 9:00–2:00 p.m. Time commitment varies depending on level of commitment, from two hours to many.

BURTON HOUSE
This transitional house at Westminster shelters formerly homeless men. Volunteers become partners with residents, who receive professional counseling and rebuild their lives.

CHRISTMAS ELVES
Help plan, prepare and distribute at least 125 Christmas baskets to families, the elderly and the disabled in our community.
Time Commitment: 1 to 2 hours a week in November and December.

DAUGHTRY HOUSE BOARD
This board oversees and manages a residential program for men living with HIV/AIDS. It meets approximately every six weeks and also take “on call” duty for the program participants.
Time Commitment: Time varies according to the number of clients and their situations. There are occasional dinners with clients, work groups for house, etc.

DELAWARE FUTURES
1. One-on-one tutoring and mentoring of inner-city high school students at Trinity Episcopal Church. 2. Provide unpaid vocational internships at your organization. 3. Assist with wilderness trips and community service projects.

EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH
Designed to help middle and high school students identify and reach their academic and career goals. Attend May get-together with DelTech & Community College students who have received Westminster scholarship money. Can include involvement with workshops on diversity, college preparation and interaction with students.

EMMANUEL DINING ROOM (WEST)
Help prepare and serve a hot lunch at the Dining Room at Jackson and 2nd Street.

EMMANUEL DINING ROOM (EAST)
Assist in serving lunch at Old Asbury Methodist church, 3rd and Walnut. A team of volunteers helps the staff prepare plates while another team serves the meals.

F.A.I.T.H. CENTER
Trained to interview and understand families with emergency needs, families who need compassion, guidance, and financial assistance, volunteers are prepared to assist in meeting the individual's particular needs. If interviewing is not your preference, other volunteer opportunities are available to serve these “working poor” families in crisis.
Time Commitment: Training one day, 9-5 at Westminster. Then once or twice a month from 10-3 at the Center on Tues., Wed. or Thurs.

FISH
An organization dedicated to fulfilling the non-emergency medically-related transportation needs of our neighbors by taking them to doctor, hospital or clinic appointments.
Time Commitment: One day per month as a work-from-home telephone volunteer arranging rides or one day per month as a driver transporting people to and from appointments.

FIRST SUNDAY FOOD COLLECTION
On the first Sunday of each month, we gather the food donated by our members and deliver it to Hanover Presbyterian Church. New volunteers are welcome!

FOOD BANK OF DELAWARE
Serve on the board or work in the warehouse or office of the largest statewide non-profit distributing food to agencies serving the hungry.

FRIENDSHIP HOUSE
Friendship House is a coalition of Christian churches and community organizations committed to making a difference in the lives of Delaware’s homeless men, women and children. We offer a sanctuary for survival and a pathway from survival to self-sufficiency. Volunteer opportunities for both group and individual activities include breakfast and evening supper providers, empowerment workshops, driving, child care, mentoring/tutoring, clothing collections and distribution, newsletters, desktop publishing, work days at transitional houses and A.A. ministry.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
A future homeowner participates in renovating or building a house with the help of volunteers who have construction and administrative skills.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA
Sponsored by the Wilmington Public Library, this program fosters one-on-one tutoring of adults with little to no reading skills. A separate program focuses on “English as a second language” (ESL) to encourage immigrants to improve their English skills. Both programs require completion of a training course to participate.

MEETING GROUND
Meeting ground operates three facilities for homeless people. Volunteers are needed for a variety of assistance including planting a garden in the spring, job counseling, and transporting clients to appointments.

MENTORING
A mentor is “a trusted friend or advisor” who talks about current experiences, reads books, helps with schoolwork, or works on a craft or projects. This makes learning fun for both mentor and child. Purpose is to help the elementary school-age child become all he or she can be— building self-esteem, interpersonal communication skills, social values and scholastic achievement. Creative Mentoring gives a 3.5-hour training class at Westminster, a requirement before mentoring.
Time Commitment: 30 minutes to 1 hour weekly as part of the regular school day.

NEW ORLEANS MISSION TEAMS
Periodically, teams go to New Orleans to assist with the recovery and/or to work with the local Habitat for Humanity organization. We are partnered with two local congregations, St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church and Berean Presbyterian Church. Volunteers age 16 (accompanied by a parent or guardian) and up are welcome. All levels of skills and talents are needed. Westminster provides some financial support for mission volunteers.

STs. ANDREW & MATTHEW FOOD PANTRY
Every Monday morning, a moderate supply of coffee, tea, sugar, bread, peanut butter and jelly are delivered to the Women’s Shelter at SsAM. These “drops” are made by four groups of individuals who share in buying the food and making the drop.
Time Commitment: Usually about two hours each quarter.

SATURDAY MORNING BREAKFAST
Help prepare and serve a free breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, tea, milk and ice water to an average of 200 men, women and children from the homeless and low-income population each Saturday morning. Help move tables and chairs, set tables and clean up after breakfast.

SOJOURNERS’ PLACE
Offers chronically homeless men and women safe housing and a full range of services to help them become independent. Help maintain the Clothing Closet, sort clothing donations, select what is appropriate and in good condition and organize shelves.

ULSTER PROJECT DELAWARE
Family hosts a teen (14-16 years old) from Northern Ireland as part of a program designed to foster Protestant-Catholic friendships.

WORSHIP & MUSIC COMMITTEE
This committee oversees all aspects of the worship service and the music program such as communion, ushers, greeters, flowers, baptisms and weddings, storytellers, choirs and special musical presentations. ACOLYTES

AUDIO VISUAL TEAM
Volunteers are needed to record audio or video of our worship services on Sundays and at special times. Training is provided on the equipment. You will serve on a rotating basis. CHAPEL CHOIR
The Chapel Choir ministry provides children in grades 3-6 with the opportunity to deepen their faith through music, and prepares them for participation and leadership in worship through music education. Each spring, the choir season culminates with the presentation of a musical during worship. This choir is an integral part of Westminster’s outstanding Chapel Club program; participants in the Choir are participants of Chapel Club. (See page 11.)

REVERBERATIONS HANDBELL CHOIR
This choir brings a new dimension of sound to our worship experience. Ringing five octaves of Schulmerich Handbells and three octaves of Malmark handchimes, the choir’s varied repertoire and creative use of instrumental accompaniment enriches the liturgy and stirs the congregation. The choir is currently seeking adult ringers who are able to read music.

THE SUNSHINE CHOIR
This choir, for (grades 1 & 2) is the first step in our graded choir program, where children discover the joy of music through singing, playing instruments and movement. Along with the Chapel Choir, the Sunshine Choir participates in gathering time on Sunday mornings as part of our Christian Education program, September through mid-April.

YOUTH CHOIR
This choir provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to share their faith through music in new and exciting ways. Singing a variety of genres, with a wide range of accompaniments, the Youth Choir continues to build on the foundation of Sunshine and Chapel Choirs. The choir challenges and stretches the youth both spiritually and musically. The Youth Choir also plans social events to celebrate their ministry together.

The mission of the Adult Education program is to provide Christian education that encourages, promotes and facilitates an understanding of our Christian faith in all its expressions in our lives, in our church and throughout the world:

CRIBBERY

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY
Small group Bible study using Disciple curriculum. Study aids include video, student manual, Bible and other resources. Purpose of study is transformational rather than informational. Courses include survey of entire Bible and other focused studies.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS

At Westminster, we strive for an innovative, interesting and creative way to help children explore questions of faith and learn the stories that give our lives meaning. YOUTH FELLOWSHIP
Teams of adults work in partnership with youth to provide leadership for our Sunday evening youth fellowship program. The program is based around community service, exploration of key topics, recreation, worship, and service to the congregation. Adult volunteers are to establish ongoing relationships with youth and help develop activities.

CARING FRIENDS
Visit a homebound member twice a month and keep in touch the other two weeks by phone or note. This caring ministry of presence is a bridge between the church and members who can no longer attend worship.

COVENANT PRAYER GROUP
Pray for church members or others who are in the hospital, ill at home or with personal problems.

HEALING PRAYER MINISTRY
We understand healing as an integral part of Jesus’ ministry then and now. We study the healing ministry of Christ, pray for one another, and offer prayers to those who seek healing.
Time Commitment: Monthly group meeting 1.5 hours, and monthly availability to pray with those who seek healing prayer (usually during a worship service).

MEMORIAL TEAS
Plan and host, or assist, with a reception in Rodney Chapel for a member family following a funeral or memorial service of a loved one. Duties include providing cookies, procuring flower arrangements, serving coffee and tea, setting up and cleaning up.
Time Commitment: Cookie baker may be asked 3-4 times a year; server may be asked 5-6 times a year; coordinator needs to be available for an entire selected month, 4 hours each reception.

STEPHEN MINISTRY
One-on-one support to someone in crisis. Members receive caregiving training.

DIVERSITY TASK FORCE
The Task Force on Diversity was formed by session to enhance the racial diversity of Westminster and its outreach to surrounding residents. We educate members on issues of racism and study the implication of diversity for the worship and programs. Current activities include developing partnerships with racial/ethnic congregations to promote joint mission and worship opportunities.

PLANNED GIVING
The Planned Giving Committee works to encourage members and friends of Westminster to make gifts of all sizes to the Westminster Endowment Fund, to educate them on the vehicles and strategies for making these gifts, and to promote planned giving to increase the size of the Westminster Endowment Fund.

PROPERTY
The Property Committee is responsible for both short-term and long-term maintenance of our wonderful facilities, including implementation of the Long-Range Property Plan, which ensures a high standard of utility, safety and attractiveness of all of our assets.

SAFETY & SECURITY
The Safety & Security Committee is responsible for the safety and security of our physical facilities. This includes defibrillator equipment and training, periodic fire drills and security systems and facilities inspections.

SPEER EDUCATION
The Speer Education Committee is charged with fulfilling the obligations of the Speer Memorial Trust, which directs that part of the income be used “to assist members of the congregation (and other persons) who want to become Presbyterian ministers and who need financial assistance.” The committee reviews applicants and selects those to receive grants for the upcoming academic year.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
Our volunteers assist with campaign planning, write articles for our publications, make home visits, serve as hosts for small group meetings, and assist with follow up phone calls.

CHIMES
Be a proof reader or deliver The Chimes newsletter to post office.
Time Commitment: About one hour each issue proof-reading (at your home or office) or about two hours each issue delivering it to the post office. The Chimes is published once a month.

DIVINE INTERVENTION TEAM
Volunteers maintain the landscaped areas around our church (except for the Memorial Garden). We pull weeds, plant flowers, water, etc. The tasks vary from April through mid-November.
Time Commitment: one or more hours as you are available.

MEMORIAL GARDEN
Provide basic care, such as weeding and watering of the garden, usually with a partner.
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours a week for the 2 weeks of your choice from May to October.

PEW POCKETS
Keep pew pockets supplied with predetermined brochures and envelopes. This is usually done the first week of the month.

PHIX-IT CORPS
Assist with small maintenance projects and minor repairs around the church. All skill levels are welcome.
Time commitment: as you are available, for up to three hours 2 times a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, September through May.

STAFF ASSISTANTS
Assist the staff with mailings (affix labels, fold and stuff envelopes), make phone calls, answer the phone, general office duties.
Time Commitment: One half-day per week. 9:00 a.m.–Noon or 12:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.

WEBMASTER ASSISTANTS
Keep the website up-to-date. For that work, all you need is to be able to visit our website once a month via computer. If you have more advanced Web skills, or want to learn them, you can take on other tasks.
